Knights Of Columbus Santa Maria Council #105

The 2011 Campaign For People With Intellectual Disabilities

Every year, during the month of October, the Santa Maria Council #105 participates in The Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities, also known as the Tootsie Roll Drive, which is probably the Knights of Columbus’ best-known national fund-raiser. Unlike fundraising done by other organizations, 100% of the money raised through the Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities goes to help people with intellectual disabilities. The Knights do not use a hard sell approach to collect money; they merely stand (or sit) near the entrance to businesses wearing a red and yellow apron designating them as a K of C fundraiser. Most people know about the annual drive and the great work of the Knights of Columbus, and will donate without any solicitation. In return they receive a “thank you” from the Knight and an offer of a Tootsie Roll to those who donate.
The Knights of Columbus, Santa Maria Council #105 has been an active participant in the Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities for decades. Through their efforts needed funds have been raised for people with disabilities in Malden to receive hospital beds, wheelchairs, wheelchair ramps at their homes, and they even raised enough money to have a van converted to accommodate a disabled child.
Brother Knights interested in volunteering for an hour or two during October to help with the annual Santa Maria Council #105 Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities, which will be held on Columbus Day Weekend, should contact the Deputy Grand Knight.
Santa Maria Council #105 success story…
How is the money raised by the Campaign For People With Intellectual Disabilities used? Here is an example of how the dollars raised by the Santa Maria Council #105 Tootsie Roll Drive are put to work to improve the quality of life of a person with physical disabilities in the Malden area. The smile on the face of the recipient is what makes participation in the Tootsie Roll Drive rewarding. Helping those less fortunate than ourselves, easing the burden of a person with a disability, living the ideals of being a Christian man, that is what it means to be a member of the Knights of Columbus.
