Knights Care = Boston Strong

Within a week after the tragic Boston Marathon bombing on April 15, 2013 that killed three people and injured more than 260 people, Santa Maria Council #105 sought a way to raise money for the victims.  At the suggestion of one of the members, Jim Dello Russo, Council #105 decided to sell “Boston Strong” pinback buttons for a $5.00 donation to the Massachusetts State Council Knights of Columbus “Boston Marathon Victims" Fund which was formed by the State Council.

The Council #105 button campaign offered people the opportunity to show their support for the victims, recognize the courage of the emergency personnel and bystanders who rushed to the aid of those who were injured, and display their pride in the resiliency of Boston to recover from this terrorist event, while contributing financially to the Boston Marathon Victims Fund.  The buttons were sold by the Knights after each of the masses at the local Church, to friends and co-workers, and the community at large through the months of May and June, 2013.

As part of their button campaign, Council #105 posted a photo of the button on their Facebook page (Knights-of-Columbus-105-Malden-MA), and were contacted by the Culture of Life Director for the Rhode Island Knights of Columbus Michael Krzywonos from Blessed Pope John Paul II Council #12613 in Cranston, Rhode Island, who offered to sell buttons on behalf of Council #105 at the RI State Convention with the approval of RI State Deputy Peter Healy.

Through the efforts of Council #105 members with the support of the Rhode Island Knights, a grand total of $1,015.00 was raised to benefit the Boston Marathon victims.  This campaign is a prime example of how the Knights of Columbus know no boundaries, and work together in fraternity to help people in need.  That’s what makes the Knights of Columbus different from other organizations; Knights are always prepared to help people in need, whether in their community, within their state, a neighboring state or on the other side of the world.  Members of the K of C live the organizations beliefs of Charity, Unity and Fraternity, every day!

Santa Maria Council #105 is grateful to Brother Ronald Fabrizio, the Council #105 top button seller, the Council #105 members who supported this fundraising drive, Brother Michael Krzywonos of Blessed Pope John Paul II Council #12613, RI State Deputy Peter Healy, the Rhode Island Knights of Columbus, and the people who purchased buttons to support the fundraiser.
